CHICAGO — Angelo Grayson Smith Jr., the boyfriend of missing Charlotte teacher and Garner native Bianca Tanner, was no longer on the run Friday night, but remained in Illinois, authorities said.

Smith was wanted for contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, said Charlotte-Mecklenburg police spokesman Robert Tufano, who added that the charge is related to Tanner's three-year-old son.

Smith reported Tanner missing on June 8, saying she was intoxicated when leaving their shared Charlotte home.

Smith's attorney, Kenneth Snow, said he client did not flee, he just left town. Snow said Smith's family was concerned for his safety.

"It's been a tough case for them, it's a tough case for everyone," Snow said.

Court records show Smith has a history of domestic violence, including restraining orders from two women.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe said the case is being treated as a homicide. Tanner has not been found as of Thursday.

Tanner, 31, grew up in Garner and lived in Greensboro before moving to Charlotte, where she was hired to work on a special project to improve educational opportunities for eight schools.
