FOUR OAKS, N.C. — Residents in the town of Four Oaks were without water for about 12 hours Thursday after two water mains ruptured around 11 a.m., a town spokeswoman said.

Crews restored water service late Thursday, but a boil water advisory is in effect until Saturday afternoon.

Four Oaks residents should boil water for a minute before using it for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth or making ice. Alternatively, they can use bottled water.

Assistant Town Clerk Kristy Baker said about 3,200 people were without water or had very low pressure Thursday night before service was restored. Several businesses were forced to close.

At Main Street Salon, Kimberly Hotutt had to reschedule Thursday's appointments.

"I was actually about to shampoo a client, a regular client, and there was no water," she said. "We did have a trickle, though, so we managed to get her hair done."

The water main breaks also forced several local restaurants to close.

"It's really tough on us, especially with McDonald's being our main competition," Bridgette Olive, an employee at Good Times Grill, said. "It has already been slow for a couple of weeks now."
