FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police said Monday that they have identified a body pulled from the Cape Fear River two weeks ago as that of a Fayetteville robbery suspect who jumped into the river in January to escape.

An officer tried to stop Hubert Douglas Carrillo for questioning in connection with a Jan. 8 robbery of a Kangaroo convenience store at 4000 S. Main St. Carrillo led the officer on a chase that ended on Medina Road, where he climbed down a ladder into the river.

Police said Carrillo tried to swim across the river but began calling for help. Two officers jumped into the frigid water but weren't able to rescue him.

Carrillo's decomposed body was found at a boat ramp off N.C. Highway 87 on April 5.
