HOPE MILLS, N.C. — Below-freezing temperatures on Wednesday morning complicated crews' efforts to respond to a house fire in Hope Mills.

Officials said the fire started around 3:30 a.m. at a home on North Main Street and South Lane. The fire started in the back of the home, where there was significant damage, then spread throughout the home.

Fire crews at the scene said the home suffered major damage and the fire was difficult to extinguish because there were many belongings inside.

No people were inside the home.

Water from firefighters' hoses covered North Main Street, closing the road between Rockfish Road and Lakeview Road.

Temperatures were in the low 20s, and crews were worried the water might freeze in the road, which is a busy thoroughfare in Hope Mills.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
