Beam from World Trade Center highlights Pittsboro 9/11 memorial

Posted September 11, 2014

— People across the Triangle will take time Thursday to remember the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and in Chatham County, residents will be able to do so at a memorial that includes a steel beam from the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

The beam arrived in Pittsboro in 2011, and work is still ongoing on a memorial that will honor those lost in the Sept. 11 attacks.

"This is now 13 years ago this happened, and very few of the children that are in school today have any rememberance of this," Don Lein, one of the organizers of the Chatham County memorial, said. "It's important for us to say, 'Hey, this happened and it called our attention to something very important.'"

The 19-foot-long beam was displayed on the 9-11 Memorial Tribute Trail through Chatham County before being brought to Pittsboro.

Elsewhere in the Triangle on Thursday, residents will mark the day at service events that include home-building events ton picking up trash.

To find a service project, check out the 9/11 Day of Service website or take a look at Activate Good’s Activate Raleigh website. There are many projects that are still accepting volunteers.

Call it what it is, attacks on Americans by Islamic extremist. Innocent men, women and children killed, murdered, and burned to death by a terrorist group.

If you are at that fire-station, you'll see it on the other side of 15/501

Location info would be nice! But I think it's along Hwy 15/501 (south of the town circle), near the county buildings. ??? I know there is a fire station that direction, which you see behind her and she mentions....but I don't drive that side of town often enough to know for sure.
