— Recreational swimming areas at Holly Point North Beach at Falls Lake have been closed because of elevated levels of bacteria in the water.

Wake County Environmental Services closed the beach on Tuesday after routine tests showed elevated levels of enterococci, bacteria that can cause infections and lead to diarrhea. Enterococci is typically found in the digestive tracts and feces of warm-blooded animals.

The county samples bacteria levels in the water each week during the summer and closes the beach to "primary contact," or any activity where someone's head may go underwater, when bacteria exceed acceptable levels. Tests must show acceptable levels of bacteria for two straight days before the beach can be reopened to swimmers.

Holly Point North Beach is still open to fishing.

Raleigh does not dump it's processed sewage into the lake, Durham does. Raleigh dumps their sewage on the back side of the dam. Smithfield drinks Raleigh's processed sewage and Raleigh drinks Durham's. Love Canal

Not surprising..long time boater on the Lake, gets nastier and nastier. But its been escalading since Mayor Meeker, pressured the Corps of Engineers to change water flow policy. The lake has very little flow now and full to the brim. Meeker may paint himself green, but he's just a self serving politican who truly has no enviormental ethics in his body. I boat, I dont swim or eat fish from Falls Lake. It's Raleigh's Love Canal.

I'm kind of surprised it is Holly Point. Usually it is Beaver Dam or Sandling Beach. I guess Holly is just up (or down) the lake. We have stopped going to Falls the last two or three years just for this reason. Typically we visit one of the two aforementioned and they close it down a week later, so no more Falls Lake for us - pity!!

Same old, same old ...... It's a dirty lake, poorly managed from even the planning stage, and always downstream from Durham.

doo doo in falls lake ? noo , you dont say . The mud hole needs about 20 million gallons of bleach dumped into it

    1. It's too early in the year to be diapers, plus a diaper or two in all of Falls Lake will get diluted and not shut the beech --- really. This is an excuse.
    2. It hasn't rained so it's not "deer et al." run-off.
    3. It's septic seeping into our streams which lead to Falls Lake.
    4. Unless you live on the tippy top of a watershed -- we are all downstream from someone.

    We all live "downstream".
