DURHAM, N.C. — As part of new federal security guidelines, Duke University officials said Friday that they won't allow people to take backpacks or large bags inside Wallace Wade Stadium. Vehicles also are now prohibited from the stadium concourse.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued recommendations to sports venues nationwide in the wake of recent terrorism-related arrests in Colorado and New York.

“This is a proactive measure to help enhance an already safe game-day experience,” John Dailey, Duke’s police chief, said in a statement.

All bags continue to be subject to search at Wallace Wade Stadium.

The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill previously banned backpacks and large bags inside Kenan Stadium. It was unclear whether North Carolina State University would enforce similar restrictions at Carter-Finley Stadium.
