Autopsy: Woman found outside Raleigh cathedral was beaten

The woman found dead on the grounds of the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Raleigh died of blunt force trauma to the head, according to an autopsy report made public Wednesday.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The woman found dead on the grounds of the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Raleigh died of blunt force trauma to the head, according to an autopsy report made public Wednesday.
Martha Hamilton Watkins, 54, suffered multiple blows to the head and face, the report said. She had fractures to her skull and ribs.

Police spokesman Jim Sughrue said a woman going to the church, at 200 Hillsborough St., found the body around 7 a.m. on July 28.
