RALEIGH, N.C. — Police asked Monday that a former North Carolina State University basketball player suspected in a home invasion give a DNA sample to be matched to evidence left at the scene.

Gavin Troy Grant, 25, is charged with first-degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Police say he and another man forced their way into an apartment on Crossroads Arbor Way on Sept. 24, 2010.

Grant was a forward/guard for N.C. State from 2004 to 2007. He played for the Utah Flash in the NBA Development League from 2007 to 2010.

Grant's bond was set at $505,000, but U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on him, meaning he cannot be released even if he posts bond.

A native of Jamaica, he moved to the U.S. illegally when he was 9 years old. Immigration officials halted deportation proceedings against him when he applied to become a permanent resident alien.
