Authorities: Man tried to flee twice in one night

A state trooper clocked an F-150 pickup truck going 68 mph in a 35 mph zone on Miami Bouelvard, near Raynor Street, around 9:45 p.m. The driver – identified by troopers as Tony Edward Poole – refused to stop and lead the trooper on a brief chase that ended at Blackwell and Pettigrew streets.

Troopers said they determined that Poole had fled from a Durham police officer who tried to pull him over earlier Tuesday evening.

Poole was charged with driving while impaired, felony fleeing and attempting to elude arrest, failure to stop for blue lights and a siren, speeding and careless and reckless driving. He was also served four outstanding warrants for charges including assault on a female.

Poole was placed in the Durham County jail under a $7,500 bond.

Poole was previously convicted of DWI in 2009 and 1994 and of driving under the influence in 1982, according to state Department of Correction records. He was also convicted of speeding to elude arrest in 2007.

DOC record show that he also has previous convictions for assault by pointing a gun and assault on a public official.
