DURHAM, N.C. — A fire inside a trash can forced the brief evacuation of a dorm at North Carolina Central University early Saturday, Durham authorities said.

Emergency officials responded to Richmond Residence Hall, at 820 E. Lawson St., at about 7 a.m. When they arrived, firefighters quickly extinguished a small fire in a trash can in a second-floor common cooking area.

The fire caused minor structural damage to the ceiling and some smoke damage to the cooking area, authorities said.

No injuries were reported, and students were evacuated to an adjacent building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
