The Gold Star Pin is a symbol of honor given to the family of those who make the ultimate sacrifice, and the Army is working to connect with more of those families who are eligible for that honor.

Gold Star pins are given to relatives of active duty service members, reserve or the National Guard killed while serving our country. The honor is retroactive to March 29, 1973.

To increase awareness, the Army is running a series of public service announcements featuring Gold Star recipients.

In one spot, Donna Engeman says the increased awareness helps her cope with the loss of her husband.

"When you see those PSAs, those are real survivors. Those are not actors," she said.
