Aquatics Center Groundbreaking Slated in Smithfield

Town and Johnston County Schools officials were going to mark the start of work on a joint facility that will cost $12 million and be open to the public as well as students.

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — The Town of Smithfield and the Johnston County Schools planned to break ground Tuesday for a $12 million aquatics center that they have been planning since 2001.

The Smithfield Recreation & Aquatics Center will be the first indoor competition pool in the county when it opens in late 2008 or early 2009, officials aid.

It will be open to the public, and Smithfield-Selma High School will use it.

The site at 700 Booker Dairy Road is partially on school property and partially on Smithfield Community Park property.

The center will be home to town Parks & Recreation Department offices and will have an eight-lane, 25-meter pool, children's splash-n-play pool, a double gymnasium, two racquetball courts, and arts and crafts/meeting room, indoor walking track, fitness room, exercise/dance/aerobics room and a banquet room with a kitchen.
