— Apex police arrested a man Tuesday after his neighbors reported that Freon in their air-conditioning units was being stolen by a group of teenagers who inhaled it to get high.

Lanious Hume, 18, of 2008 Jerimouth Drive, was charged with five counts of larceny. He was given a $2,400 secured bond and scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon.

Police said four teens siphoned the chemical refrigerant into plastic bags at 2010 and 2005 Jerimouth Drive in the Crockett's Ridge subdivision Sunday.

It wasn't clear whether more people will be charged.

He was easy to catch. Officers found him running in circles, barking like a dog.

You can't ban freon... it's the reason why we are able to keep cool as well as keep warm in our houses and cars. They'll ban it once they find a safe alternative

Kids today are idoits. Most of them want everything handed to them and not work for any thing. That's sad. Our generation is in so much trouble. Theres no way this generation can take care of us? Scary thought!!! Parents.. Get involve with your kids lifes.

Huffing Freon, how common. Why doesn't this young gentleman simply grow pot like the rest of us?

Freon should not be banned, teenagers huffing it should. Wait till they start to have seizures and brain bleeds! They will think that is REALLY cool! Just plain dumb.

"The youth of America...we are in great trouble!"-AirBorne Daddy

Every generation of parents says that about the kids of the day. Not an excuse for this, but while the details might have changed, that parents are screaming at their kids "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!" is nothing new.

Glad to see they made an arrest. Too often in small towns, the police looks the other way so as not to make a scene and thus protect property values. I say this as someone who lives in the Crockett's Ridge neighborhood so it is my property value on the line.

"anybody who would normally be called a parent involved in this kid's life?"
One problem is that kids who do have parents involved in their lives are in contact with kids who don't. Maybe adults/parents who ARE doing the right thing should start insisting that all parents do it also. For instance, if you know or even suspect a parent is letting kids do drugs/huff/smoke in the house because "it's better if I let them do it at home instead of on the street" - call them on it! Responsible adults have got to start taking society back instead of worrying about what is politically correct or what's going to hurt someone's "self esteem".
