IRS safety upgrades delay some refunds
New security features being installed on Internal Revenue Service computers are causing delays in processing early federal tax refunds, the U.S. government said Tuesday.
Posted — UpdatedThe problem impacts anyone who filed their federal taxes before Jan. 26.
Normally, processing returns takes up to three weeks. The new security features, which are designed to stop refund fraud, are delaying the processing an extra week.
Anyone who filed on or after Jan. 26 should not see delays.
North Carolina experienced delays in state refunds last year because the state was strapped for money. A spokesperson for the North Carolina Department of Revenue said, this year, refunds are on schedule.
