2 young daughters of Moore County pastor killed during family's minivan crash
Two young girls were killed Tuesday when the driver of the vehicle they were passengers in lost control and struck a concrete bridge before overturning in Hoke County, authorities said Wednesday.
Posted — UpdatedThe State Highway Patrol confirmed to WRAL News that sisters Jenna Lynn Duckworth, 13, and Audra Duckworth, 11, were killed during the crash on U.S. Highway 15/501 about 13 miles west of Raeford.
Bobby Wayne Duckworth, his wife, Audra, and their son, Benjamin, were also inside the vehicle when it crashed, authorities said.
The three all survived the wreck and were rushed to a hospital in Scotland County for treatment, but their conditions were not immediately available.
Troopers say the family's 2004 Ford Excursion was southbound when it hit the concrete wall of the bridge that divides Hoke and Scotland counties.
The driver lost control and struck the bridge before overturning and landing on its roof.
The incident occurred about 5:30 p.m. and the family of five were inside the vehicle when the crash occurred, authorities said.
Highway Patrol troopers said speed was not a factor but authorities said heavy rain falling at the time of the crash may have played a role in the wreck.
It was not immediately clear if the two girls were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The family members are part of Highland Baptist Church in Vass and congregation members are wrapping their arms around the family.
William Vaughn, the girls' grandfather, said, "Do not forget to pray for this family, not just this weekend but for the weeks to come. Because those parents are going to be broken six months from now and they're going to need somebody praying for them."
