Rolling stop caused deadly Durham crash

Posted December 11, 2015

One person died and another was injured Friday morning in a two-car crash on Durham's Roxboro Street just before 8 a.m.

— Durham police determined that Alta Ann Surles, 67, failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection of South Roxboro and Moline streets, causing the accident that claimed her life.

Surles, of Durham, pulled into the path of a 2008 Buick Enclave. The driver of that vehicle was not hurt.

I see a dozen or more people each day, who do not stop at stop signs, or even red lights. I have suggested for many years, that some simple residents of a city or county, should be sworn into those departments, for the sole reason being to make traffic stops and write parking violations, in major and minor parking lots. I'm not taking about meter maids. These people should also, NOT be required to wait until their "shift" begins. Maybe on a lunch break, or just before or after a movie. How about at your local Food Lion, Kroger or Food Lion? Walmart or Target? Can we not at least consider it?
