2 dead in east Raleigh shooting

A man died and a woman was hospitalized early Friday in a shooting in east Raleigh.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Two people died Friday in a shooting in east Raleigh.

Police were called to the intersection of New Bern Avenue and Trawick Road just after 1:30 a.m. When they arrived, they found the body of Rakim Marquis Lofton, 22, of Raleigh. .

A woman, identified at Khadijah Shantell Carney, 21, of Apex, was also found in a car at the scene. She was taken to nearby WakeMed, where she died.

In a 911 call, a man said that he saw a person laying in the middle of the street while a Mitsubishi Galant was parked in the middle of the road. The caller said that he saw a gun on the scene, laying next to the body on the ground.

Trawick Road was closed between New Bern Avenue and Lake Woodard Drive until almost 11 a.m.
