'This Is Us' recap: The Ka-Toby wedding

OK, guys. We did it. If you're reading this, I hope you have made it through the season two finale of our favorite show, "This is Us." It wasn't without a few tears, and to be honest, I think I am still digesting last night's episode - there was a lot going on! So let's recap.

OK, guys. We did it. If you’re reading this, I hope you have made it through the season two finale of our favorite show, “This is Us.” It wasn’t without a few tears, and to be honest, I think I am still digesting last night’s episode – there was a lot going on! So let’s recap.

The Ka-Toby wedding (love that by the way) takes place at the Pearson family cabin, and Kevin and Randall are serving as the wedding coordinators. I love my brother, don’t get me wrong, but there is no way I would ever let him take the reins on my wedding day, but from the moment we heard Kevin yelling “Don’t justify it, fix it” to Randall on the phone, we know it’s all going to be OK.

The first wedding day emergency comes when Kate cannot find her something old – Jack’s Daytona Beach T-shirt. It was Toby’s job to pack it…he forgot. Kate tries to remain calm, as we know the wedding day is sure to stir up a lot of emotion. Kate decides to run an “errand” on which she ends up being gone for hours. Cue Kevin and Randall – Team Fix It.

In search of a replacement something old, Kate heads to the old ice cream shop she and her father used to visit on their trips to the cabin. The place has changed, and they no longer sell her favorite flavor – she was hoping to buy it to serve alongside cake at the reception. Kevin and Randall just miss her there as they do their best to follow her tracks and bring Kate back. During their adventure, the two play a game that Beth and Randall invented called “Worst Case Scenario.” OK, pause for a second because this game is brilliant! Personally, I am a worrier, and I think I need to start playing this to let out some of the worries when things don’t go my way. It also leads to a little laugh, so why not.

During the game, the two question themselves - did Randall get too absorbed in his own life and abandon his sister? Did Kevin allow Kate to spend her time taking care of him instead of taking care of herself?

When Kate realizes the ice cream won’t work, she calls Rebecca, who we know already feels like a walking reminder of Jack and is scared to even breathe around Kate in fear of setting her off. Kate confides in her mom that’s she’s been having these dreams. OHHH IT’S A DREAM! The dream we’ve been seeing all episode with old Jack - who looks great, btw - and Rebecca. The Pearsons are all up at the cabin as Jack and Rebecca celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.

Rebecca does her best to talk to Kate and remind her that weddings bring out a lot of emotion, but she also makes Kate realize Toby is not in the dreams. This sends Kate to her next destination – the tree in the woods where she and her father used to have long talks. With the urn in hand, she tells her dad that she’s been holding on to the memory of him too tightly for too long. She needs to make room for Toby. In doing so, she releases the rest of Jack’s ashes.

When Kate heads back to the car, her brothers are there waiting for her. The Big Three head back to the cabin to get Kate married! Hallelujah!

Meanwhile, back at the cabin, other drama is unfolding. Ever since Deja’s mom “asked to be stripped of all parental rights,” Deja has been angry and mean. Beth and Randall are in the process of adopting her, but the change in attitude has them worried. Enter Beth’s beautiful cousin – Zoe. Zoe talks to Deja about how her parents dumped her at Beth’s house when she was a kid and how angry she was. She explains how mean she was to Beth and her family, until one day she just forgot to be mean. The story is enough to make Deja put on a cute floral dress for the wedding, and Beth is excited! Thanks, Zoe!

Toby’s divorced parents are also in town – and you know something is about to go down. They “never agree on anything” until they come to talk to Toby about how they both have concerns about him marrying Kate. His mom and dad explain that they sit there and watch him “bend over backward for her” and that they think she may be “unstable.” Toby is angry and basically tells them to leave if they can’t have faith in his choice.

Kate, Kevin and Randall finally arrive back at the cabin, and Rebecca sees Kate for the first time in her wedding dress. Kate tells her mom that all she has ever wanted was to be like her – a singer like her, a mom like her, a marriage like hers. (tears, tears, all the tears.) And that Rebecca is not in Kate’s way, she IS Kate’s way. (still crying.)

Time for the wedding! As everyone is walking down the aisle – Kate is escorted by her brothers – the scene cuts back and forth with an old scene where Jack and little Kate talk about marriage. It is a very sweet moment, one that Jack would have been so proud of. Kate and Toby say their “I dos,” and it is time to party.

During the reception, Toby’s mom comes up to Deja, Tess and Annie near the dessert table. She comments on how much Tess and Annie look like their mom, and how much Deja is a spitting image of her dad. Deja gets angry and leaves.

Kevin gives his toast. The breathing exercise is a little strange, but I appreciated it, and so did Randall, Kate and Rebecca. A fresh start. Kevin calls Kate “Katie-girl,” a nickname we know Jack used for his daughter. And he wants to make Kate feel as special as her father would have made her feel on her wedding day. He then calls up Randall to “save him.” Randall talks about how he loves control but has realized we have no control over the future, only who we go there with. (Loved this sentiment, but I know it is foreshadowing something.)

The writers now take us into the future…and boy, I was NOT expecting this. We see Kevin on a plane with a photo of his father in Vietnam. Next to him, all cozied up, is Beth’s cousin Zoe from the wedding (back at the reception we did see a brief exchange between the two). We also see Kate going into her and Toby’s bedroom, where Toby is lying under the covers with the curtains drawn. She is talking about his meds. Could this be the depressive state his parents talked about earlier? We also see older Randall talking to social worker-aged Tess.

Back at the wedding, we see Beth and Randall realize Deja is missing. We find out she was outside with a baseball bat smashing the windshield of Randall’s car.

Back to the flashfoward – Randall tells Tess that “it is time to go see her.” Older Tess isn’t ready. Randall isn’t either. We assume based on how this is cut that he is talking about Deja…but that seems a little too obvious. WHAT IS HAPPENING?!

OK, I think it is time for us to all release a deep breath, seeing as we have to wait for the fall to find out what the heck is happening with the Pearsons. Until then, my fellow “This Is Us” fans!
