A man was taken to the hospital Friday after shots were fired at an apartment complex in north Raleigh.

At 2:04 a.m., police responded to a report of shots fired in the 6300 block of Shanda Drive, at the Legacy at Six Forks apartments off Sandy Forks Road.

A short time later, a man showed up at Duke Raleigh Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Just before 5 a.m., WRAL's Kelsey Coffey heard police say, "Come out with your hands up." Coffey heard around 10 popping sounds.

Police said there was no barricaded subject, no officers were shot at, and officers did not fire their weapons.

A spokesperson said, "The noises that were heard were produced by a special tool deployed as part of ensuring the safety of residents within the complex."

Police were at the apartment complex for hours and could be seen holding guns pointed toward an apartment building.

Crime scene tape could be seen surrounding at least two buildings at the complex.

Neighbors said everything unfolded in an apartment building, where one door was riddled with six bullet holes. The apartment's patio door was also shattered.

Broadcastify radio traffic indicates neighbors heard several shots and a woman screaming.

Neighbors told WRAL News they were startled from their sleep.

"I do recall when I woke up a loud bang," said Gerald Townes. "I don't know if it was a flash bang or something ... I was like hold up, is that what that was? [I] look out window and it's like oh, snap."

WRAL News is working to learn if police have taken anyone into custody.

An investigation is ongoing.
