NEWTON GROVE, N.C. — A tanker heading to Raleigh with 8,800 gallons of gasoline from Wilmington was detoured Thursday when a large SUV with a family of five heading to “The Ark” in Kentucky, drifted into the side of the tank trailer.

“A moment of inattention,” the SUV driver’s mom said in disbelief that they all made it out alive.

The SUV, being driven by a 15-year old, became trapped and dragged by the fully loaded tanker, on westbound Interstate 40 near the Sampson County line.

All “miraculously” escaped injury.

The truck driver was uninjured but still shaken an hour after the crash, knowing what could have been, he said.
