DURHAM, N.C. — A pink rainbow hung over Durham this weekend.

The Instagram user @kelzeedilla posted a photo of the rainbow on Sunday. The rainbow was framed by pink clouds over the City Center District.

The City of Durham tweeted the photo on Monday.

WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said the pink hue is because of the sun’s rays traveling through moisture and air pollution. It’s the same reason sunrises and sunsets appear pink.

If a rainbow appears during a sunset, when light rays scatter, the rainbow will look pink instead of having its usual spectrum of colors.
