Love is in the air, and Washington, N.C., is a perfect place for your next date or romantic getaway!

Being positioned on the Pamlico River, this charming town has some of the most idyllic spots you'll find anywhere to spend with your significant other.

When I met my husband, Ashley, it was at the historic train depo -- now the Washington Civic Center. We were at community theater auditions for a play. It was love at first sight, and we did many productions on the stage over the years. We loved the historic charm of our town. We actually got married on stage at the civic center, and Washington will always be a special place for us.

Charles and Joann McCollough, both pastors at a local church, have always enjoyed the enchanting locales that Washington offers.

"We met on my mama's front porch during a social, but we have enjoyed the waterfront and Havens Gardens together throughout our 40 years of marriage."

Mrs. Joann said they have always enjoyed helping people in town through ministry, as well as joyriding around the picturesque town and shopping in the eclectic boutiques that Washington has. Pastor Charles agreed and added, "We've also always enjoyed crabbing together on the Pamlico."

Indeed, crabbing, fishing or chartering a boat ride are some of the most delightful ways to spend time together in Washington. If you are looking for more active activities to do with your main squeeze, kayaking, bicycling or stand-up paddling board might be your bonding-time fun.

Former NFL player Terrance Copper and his wife, Kandy, are both from Washington, and consider it a very special place.

"We actually started dating as juniors at Washington High School. We have several places in town that are go-to spots for us. Frank's Pizza & Italian Restaurant is one."

Copper said Washington will always have a meaningful place in their hearts.

"I wouldn't say there's one special place [in Washington]. It's the whole town that is special to us. We still attend church every Sunday in town. Our families and friends are there, and this is where we grew up and fell in love."

Washington Civic Center Events Coordinator ReAnne Mayo hears from many couples about their favorite things in Washington.

"One thing I hear the most is how exquisite our sunsets are here. They also like the fact that as many diverse activities to do as there are couples' interests."

Mayo said another thing she hears from couples is the number of affordable Airbnbs there are and that they're all-in great locations -- near the water, walking distance to dining, shopping and the historic district.

Mayo said many couples, both locals and visiting, say they love the 'mom & pop warmth of the town.' That quaint, hometown vibe and the memories created here are what brings couples here and keeps that romance alive.

Washingtonians Jane and Mac McCotter actually met on a blind date and got engaged three weeks later, when he dropped a diamond ring into her champagne glass at dinner. Fifty-four years later, Jane said they are still very happy and appreciative of all their Washington memories. She said when they were just starting out, they enjoyed boating and the river with friends.

"We spent time with friends of all ages. [Age] didn't matter; we loved the town, the people, and the Pamlico."

The water does seem to unite folks, bring couples together and is the backdrop for great memories.

"It's a wonderful little town; we love it here."

Making magical memories together can be as simple as a picnic on the waterfront, or as magical as a horse and carriage ride through Washington (Bath Creek Stables, 252-923-5645) or a hot air balloon ride (IBX Balloon Flights, 505-720-5438.)

Whether you want to have a romantic dinner with your sweetie in one of the dining establishments or are looking for a more adventurous way to spend time together, Washington can provide a plethora of fun activities for you and your honey.

What better way to say 'I love you' than spending time together and making a memory in Washington?
