CARY, N.C. — The new IKEA opening in Cary in the coming years will be big and blue just like the others, according to town officials.

Individuals with the Town of Cary confirmed Thursday that the 380,000-square-foot building, which will rest on 20 acres of land near Cary Towne Center, will feature its famous bright blue metal exterior and 3,600 square foot sign.

Questions about the building's appearance came from residents who know that Cary strictly regulates the appearances of businesses, apartments and townhomes within the town limits. Town of Cary design standards stipulate issues like building height, signage, masonry and more. Though many appreciate the town's pleasant appearance, a running joke refers to Cary as a "beige" town.

In October, Cary Town Council members approved the Swedish retailer's proposal to build the new furniture super center, but the approval required town leaders to bend their rules. "[There are] 10 or 12 development standards that deviate from our norm, but rules are made to be broken," said Councilman Ed Yerha.

Demolition could begin in 2018, groundbreaking could begin in 2019 and the store could be open as early as summer 2020, officials say.
