RALEIGH, N.C. — A Wake County resident was killed Wednesday after their vehicle collided head on into a trash truck on Old Stage Road, prompting officials to shut down the two-lane road while they investigated the crash.

The N.C. State Patrol said Carroll Lamar Wyke, 66, died at the scene after the crash occurred shortly after 10 a.m. near Ten Ten Road, which is four miles south of Garner.

Live video from Sky5 showed a white sheet over the driver's side window of Wyke's wrecked vehicle. Authorities said Wyke's vehicle was northbound on Old Stage Road when it crossed the centerline and struck a southbound trash truck.

Wyke's vehicle burst into flames upon impact.

Investigators said they were unsure why the vehicle crossed the dividing line, but alcohol and speed did not appear to be factors in the collision. Authorities did not immediately say if the driver of the truck was injured during the incident.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area while officials investigated the crash. The road reopened after being closed while officers investigated the accident.
