BENSON, N.C. — A man traveling from Virginia on Interstate 95 lost his life Saturday night, the state Highway Patrol reported.

Jesse Wood Sheppard, 18, of 825 Salem Highway in Stuart, Va., was a passenger in a car traveling northbound. Driver Robert Corns, 19, of Critz, Va., attempted to change lanes just south of Benson, the state Highway Patrol spokesman said, and clipped the car to the left. As a result, Corns' car ran off the road and flipped. Sheppard was not wearing a seat belt, and was ejected from the vehicle.

Corns was treated and released from WakeMed. He was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and released from the Johnston County Jail under a $5,000 bond.

Paramedics transported another passenger, Christopher Bryce Howell, 19, also of Va.,  to WakeMed. He was listed in good condition Sunday evening.

The driver of the clipped vehicle was not injured.
