Wreck in Sanford kills woman driver, injures one other

The elderly woman's car was going the wrong way at U.S. Highway 421 and U.S. Highway 1 Bypass when it smashed into a pickup truck, police said. She died at the scene.

SANFORD, N.C. — An elderly woman died after her car collided head-on with a pickup truck near the junction of U.S. highways 1 and 421 Bypass on Thursday afternoon, Sanford police said.

The woman was driving north in the southbound lanes around 2 p.m., police said, though it was not immediately clear which road she was on.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pickup truck driver was pinned in and had to be extricated, according to local radio station WWGP. He was flown to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where he was listed in serious condition.

Traffic was temporarily blocked along the highways.
