WRAL viewer helps find stolen truck with loved one's ashes inside
A Wake County family is pleading for the return of a son's stolen pickup truck, not only for the truck but for a meaningful keepsake that was inside.
Posted — UpdatedThe family was distraught after learning the ashes were taken.
But, on Sunday, the family was able to find the truck and the ashes.
"We were really relieved. It was a heavy burden on me, and my brother means a lot to me -- he always had. It was like losing him again and now I have him back," said Kyle Marshburn, whose truck was stolen from the parking lot at Athens Drive Magnet High School.
WRAL viewer Gwen Axtell said she was driving by Brook Hill Apartments in Raleigh when she spotted a white four-door Avalanche. Axtell said when she looked closer, she saw the chain that carried Padgett's ashes.
"I call 911 right away. I gave the license plate number ... they came by and checked that it was the car," said Axtell.
The Marshburns were called and arrived at the scene to identify the truck.
That's when they found the ashes.
"I was so excited when I saw Raleigh Police Department calling. I went inside, I said, 'I got some good news for you. We have the truck and the cross.' It was amazing," said Tiffany Marshburn.
"I was so excited, I went into recovery mode," said father Robert Marshburn.
The Marshburns said they received so much support from the community, even from people who wanted to help search for the truck and donate money for a reward.
