Our newsroom received a really nice e-mail from a viewer this morning, and it gave me an idea for an Inside WRAL blog. Before I explain, I’ll let you read the e-mail:

“Hi, this is my last weekend in Raleigh after living here 35 years! I'm relocating to the coast … One of the biggest things I'm going to miss is WRAL!!! I've watched the anchor staff come and go, seen various ones that have had kids that are now grown up! My sister told me I could watch WRAL on my laptop. Can you please tell me how to go about doing this? I have registered with WRAL. Thanks! – Linda”

Linda’s sister is right – she can watch our newscasts live on WRAL.com at the top of our homepage. This got me thinking: “How many people watch our newscasts and other videos online? What are our most popular videos?” I asked my boss, WRAL.com Managing Editor Jodi Leese Glusco, if she could share some info about our online video. Here’s her answer:

“We get about 1 million video views – live and on-demand – in a month. By far, our most popular videos are the weather forecast and the lottery drawing. Of the newscasts, the most-viewed one online is the noon news. We THINK that is because people who can't tune in to TV watch us online from their workplace.”

Very interesting! Do you watch any of our newscasts or other videos online? If so, which ones are your favorites? What would you like to see more of? Here are just a few of the videos we offer online:

  • Live newscasts
  • Trial coverage
  • Traffic cameras
  • Documentaries
  • Lottery drawings
  • Tar Heel Traveler
  • News conferences
  • Restaurant ratings
  • Extended interviews
  • Go Ask Mom videos
  • Local & national video
  • School board meetings
  • Entertainment reporting
  • Raw footage from Sky 5
  • WeatherCenter Forecast
