WRAL-TV names new general manager

Steven D. Hammel comes to the Triangle from Phoenix, where he was vice president and general manager at KPHO-TV.

RALEIGH, N.C. — WRAL-TV has a new general manager. Jim Goodmon, president of WRAL-TV parent company Capitol Broadcasting Company, named Steven D. Hammel vice president and general manager effective Nov. 10.

“We’re excited to have Steve join the team as we move into the digital transition,” Goodmon said. “News and local programming will be more important than ever in the future and Steve brings the experience and commitment to meet the challenge.”

Hammel comes to the Triangle from Phoenix, where he held a similar role at CBS-affiliate KPHO-TV.

Hammel's television news career includes leadership positions at WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C., as well as at stations in St. Louis, Mo., Rochester and Syracuse, N.Y., Dallas, and Harrisburg, Pa.

“For years, I’ve always admired WRAL’s strong news tradition and cutting-edge leadership in technology. It will be my privilege to lead such a dedicated group of professionals,” Hammel said.

He is a graduate of Syracuse University.
