WILSON, N.C. — A worker at a Wilson packaging plant died Thursday afternoon after falling into a machine, authorities said.

Police were called to Peninsula Packaging Co., at 2540 Wilco Blvd., at about 2:20 p.m. in response to an industrial accident. Emergency workers found that Anthony "Tony" Ballew, 44, of Mount Olive, died after getting trapped in a production machine, police said.

The state Division of Occupational Safety and Health was investigating the accident, said Neal O'Briant, spokesman for the state Department of Labor. A preliminary investigation determined the worker was caught in an extruder machine, he said.
