DURHAM, N.C. — A judge on Monday ordered Brianna Bridges, 26, held without bond on a murder charge related to the shooting death of man on Friday in Durham.

Durham police said Alvis J. Gentry, 28, was shot Friday shortly before 6 p.m. in the 1100 block of Morreene Road. They do not believe the shooting was random. Julian Hall, an attorney hired by Bridges' family, said the pair had a previous romantic relationship.

In her court appearance on Monday, Bridges was represented by a public defender, who said she was a student at Alamance Community College, holds down a job and is a regular churchgoer.

"She is a young, hardworking woman. She is proud that she just bought her first vehicle by herself. She moved into an apartment by herself. She's in school," Hall said. "It's horrible for the victim but it's also horrible because she's in this position."

The prosecutor noted that Bridges had no prior criminal record.

In court, the judge did not set a bond, saying she wanted to wait to speak with the victim's family first.

"She is charged with first-degree murder. That's the taking of a life with malice and forethought," Hall said. "I know that there are going to be some facts that come out later on that the public will learn and know that this is not done with malice and or forethought."
