Woman shot in back on University Drive in Durham

A woman inside an SUV was shot late Tuesday on University Drive in Durham.

DURHAM, N.C. — A woman inside an SUV was shot late Tuesday on University Drive.

A 38-year-old woman was stopped at a red light on University Drive at Summit Street at about 9:15 p.m. when she heard several shots and then realized she had been shot in the back, police said. The woman was taken to Duke Universitry Hospital for treatment of serious injuries that police said didn't appear to be life-threatening.

The woman told officers she believed the shots were fired by two men on a motorcycle. A gray Chrysler and a dark-colored sedan were also seen in the area when the shooting occurred, police said.

An unoccupied parked car on Forestwood Drive was damaged during the shooting.
