RALEIGH, N.C. — A Garner woman was sentenced to prison Friday after pleading guilty in her husband's shooting death seven years ago.

Karen Elaine Everett was sentenced to 115 to 147 months in prison, but she was given credit for the time she's already been behind bars.

Everett entered an Alford plea to a charge of second-degree murder. An Alford plea is treated as a guilty plea, but the defendant doesn't admit guilt in the crime.

She had been convicted twice of killing her husband, Michael Everett, in November 2000, but both convictions were overturned on appeal. She has maintained that she shot her husband in self-defense.
