Woman says Wayne deputy punched her at county fair

Kelly acknowledged Sunday that she pulled away from a deputy as she was being led out, prompting him to grab her by her jacket and take a swing at her.

The incident was caught on video that was posted to Facebook.

"Yeah, I pulled away, but I feel like that wasn’t called for," she said. "He was grabbing me hard, and I pulled away and said, 'Quit grabbing me like that.' Like he was grabbing me hard, like that wasn’t called for."

"He yanked me up, and then he was hitting me, but I never touched the back of his head, and he said I hit the back of his head," Kelly said. "He had both of my arms, so how could I grab for [a gun or] something – and I had a whole [fair game prize] bear in my hand."

"We have been made aware of an incident at the Wayne County Fairgrounds this weekend," the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. "The incident is currently being reviewed, and more information will be released after all information has been gathered."

Lateryka Sanders, Kelly's mother, said she hopes the sheriff's office learns from the incident and that deputies don't engage in similar conduct in the future.

"There’s no protocol [that], if my daughter yanked away from you, you punch my daughter. There’s no protocol for that. It wasn’t called for," Sanders said. "I feel like they overstepped their boundaries."

The family has filed a complaint about the incident, and the sheriff's officer said it is under review.
