Neighbor remembers Cynthia Surles

Maria Dailey is a neighbor of Surles.

"She was very nice," Dailey said of Surles. "[She was] humble, didn’t bother nobody over here, quiet [and] very friendly.

Surles sister told WRAL News that investigators informed the family on Wednesday night that Surles' son Joshua shot her.

Police radio traffic on Broadcastify appears to support that.

Neighbors said they had to call the police on Joshua Surles in December 2021. An arrest record shows he broke into his mother's home and strangled her.

Court records show the charges were dismissed in March as part of a plea deal. The same day, Joshua Surles pleaded guilty to two charges of assault with a deadly weapon in an unrelated incident from 2019.

In June, Joshua Surles was released from prison after getting credit for time served.

WRAL News reached out to Raleigh police for a response to the Surles' statement, and to ask if Joshua Surles is a suspect in his mother's death.

In response, Raleigh police declined to name anyone involved, saing the investigation is ongoing.

"[I am] very sad, hurt [and] upset because she did not deserve it," Dailey said.
