HALIFAX, N.C. — Sheriff's deputies from Wayne and Halifax counties were investigating an alleged kidnapping and assault Wednesday.

Kimberly Diane Matthews told authorities that she was driving on N.C. Highway 13 when she thought she saw someone she knew walking along the road. By the time she realized the man was a stranger, Matthews said, he had gotten in her car.

Matthews told authorities the man forced her to drive around, assaulted her repeatedly and eventually took her jewelry, purse and cell phone.

Matthews said the man left her stranded in Halifax County after her car ran out of gas. She was found at 5 a.m. by a member of the state Highway Patrol.

Matthews described her assailant as a white man in his 40s with thinning, blond hair, a mustache and beard. He is about 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighs about 220 pounds and was missing a front tooth. He was last seen wearing a green shirt and khaki cargo shorts.

Anyone with information about the man's identity is asked to contact the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office at 919-731-1481 or Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 919-735-5555.
