Jackie Saxton leads Helping Horse Theraputic Riding Program, which serves physically, mentally and/or emotionally disabled youth throughout Wake County. She is the 2023 WRAL Voters' Choice Award Woman of the Year.

<p>Jackie Saxton had been working for 20 years in human resources when she made the decision to follow her heart to helping horse therapeutic riding program, I had started volunteering with helping horse. Well, prior to me, semi retiring from, from that career and there was just a passion there, there was something that just really pulled at my heart strings that really wanted to be more involved with helping horse. So when the opportunity came up, when they were looking for an executive director in 2017, it, it really pulled me to, that's what I needed to be doing. The program provides horseback riding lessons to students with a variety of special needs. The connections that we see between the horses and the students is really um quite amazing to watch. Late last year, Saxton was named one of five finalists for the 2023 Wrel Voters Choice Award for Woman of the Year. I think it's great for helping horse to get the recognition. And, you know, I may be at that leadership role, but it really takes the entire team and I'm blessed to have a wonderful team to work with every day. I think women have a great way of leading people um to, to do great work, to be able to um use the characteristics that we have as women to lead and to guide. And I think, I think women just need to go for what they want and, and find their passion. Saxon's passion led her to helping horse, which now has a permanent home. After purchasing the land has been leasing for years. It's been a great accomplishment to finally purchase the land and be able to call that uh a home that we're gonna continue to grow and be able to pass down to the younger generation as they are starting to, to move up into leadership roles. And um I know the community will support us through that. And congratulations to Jackie Saxton, the 2023 Wral Voters Choice Award Woman of the year. So.</p>

<p>For Elaine o'neill. 2024 is a year for reconnecting with her love of music. I hope to create a playlist. A new one. See what's going on out there in the music world and sing back in the band, sing in a band. I used to sing in a band, so I wanna do that again. O'neill took office as Durham's first black female mayor in 2021. She opted not to seek a second term. O'neill said one of her biggest challenges early on was time management. The mayor's job is by statute, supposedly a part time job and you know, that cannot happen, right? So it's basically for me, it was beginning to turn into a seven day a week job and all day when I initially started. So I had to figure out how to balance it. How do you uh find the time to do the necessary things that you know, you absolutely have to do as well as all of the things that are things that you want to do to help to make the city better and then have a life o'neill is one of five finalists for the 2023 Woman of the Year in the WRL Voters Choice Awards. Wow. I'm excited about it. Unexpected. Of course, but I was humbled by surprised all of those things. You don't really think about those things when you're in the midst of doing whatever it is you're doing. So I, I appreciate it. I do whatever the future holds. Durham will always be a huge part of it. I like all things. Durham. I like our warts. Um uh I like the way that we are very vocal about our issues and how we are willing to, to uh talk about it in public. Um We don't try to hide a lot of things. Uh At least not in the Durham that I've grown up in. We've been pretty straightforward and trying to address very difficult issues. So I love Durham. Durham is, is where my heart is and will always be Kathy Hanrahan Wral News.</p>
