RALEIGH, N.C. — A 43-year-old woman died after police say she stepped into traffic while trying to cross South Saunders Street Friday night. Authorities were on the scene of a fatal pedestrian wreck at South Saunders Street and Ileagnes Road Friday night.

Zona Allen Neil, of Ileagnes Drive, safely crossed outbound lanes of Saunders, at Ileagnes, shortly after 8:30 p.m., police said. She stepped off the median in front of one vehicle in inbound lanes and jumped back, but was hit by another vehicle.

Neil was attempting to cross the street against the light, said police, who did not plan to file charges in the case.

Inbound lane South Saunders Street was closed while crews worked the scene.
