FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Fayetteville Police Department's homicide unit is investigating a death Sunday at the Westlake at Morganton Apartments in Fayetteville.

Officers said they responded to reports of a possible shooting around 5:30 p.m. on the 100 block of Westwick Lane. The complex is only 15 minutes away from Fort Bragg and a lot of the tenants are either military or ex-military.

When officers arrived, they found a 27-year-old woman lying outside one of the units. The woman was taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Police are currently withholding the victim's name until her family has been notified and said the circumstances surrounding her death are under investigation. Police did confirm the victim was ex-military.

Neighbors in the complex said the complex is pretty quiet and something like this never happened here.

Police said they do not believe this is a domestic violence situation, nor should the other tenants in the complex worry, adding they don't believe it was random.

"It's not random," said Fayetteville police captain Charles Hunt. "We're kind of confident this is not a random act."

Police are asking anyone with information related to the death investigation to contact Detective S. Shirey at (910)-751-3009. If you would like to remain anonymous, police said to contact CrimeStoppers at (910)-751-8477
