Fatal Aberdeen wreck
ABERDEEN, N.C. — A Carthage woman died Tuesday afternoon after the car she was riding in skidded off a snowy road near Aberdeen and slammed into a tree, authorities said.

The crash occurred at about 1:50 p.m. on Sandpit Road, south of N.C. Highway 5.

Viacente Osvaldo Castillo Gonzalez, 24, of Robbins, was traveling southwest on Sandpit Road when he lost control on the snow-covered roadway, the State Highway Patrol said. The car went off the right side of the road, and Gonzalez over-corrected and struck a tree, troopers said.

Gonzalez and passenger Breanna Lynn Tile, 23, had to be extricated from the car by Pinebluff and Aberdeen Fire and Rescue units. They were taken to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, where Tile was pronounced dead.

Gonzalez suffered injuries that weren't considered life-threatening.

Charges are pending the case, troopers said.
