SANFORD, N.C. — Authorities charged a man with felony death by vehicle Wednesday after the car he was driving swerved across the center lane on N.C. Highway 78 and hit another car, killing a woman.

Matthew Scott Phelps, 18, is accused of crossing the center line into the path of a vehicle driven by Daniel Watts. Authorities said Watts, 24, swerved to avoid a head-on collision.

Watts' vehicle was hit on the passenger side, killing Elizabeth Anne Causey, 43, authorities said. Watts was not injured.

Highway Patrol troopers said they believe alcohol was involved in the crash, which happened at 6:35 a.m.
