KENLY, N.C. — A woman was killed and a teen and toddler hurt Sunday afternoon during a crash in Johnston County that prompted law enforcement authorities to close a stretch of N.C. Highway 222 while officials responded to and investigated the wreck.

Law enforcement authorities confirmed to WRAL News that two young victims, a 2-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, were rushed for medical care to WakeMed after the crash, which occurred about 2:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of N.C. 222 near Bunn Road.

According to the State Highway Patrol, the children's mother, Alejandra Lopez, 42, of Kenly, was killed during the crash.

The crash occurred when a white Lexus sedan collided with a Chevrolet pickup, driven by Percy Daughtry IV, 21, of Selma, a Highway Patrol trooper said. Daughtry is a student who attends University of Mount Olive, officials said.

Authorities said Daughtry would be charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle in connection with the crash.

According to investigators, the eastbound driver of the pickup lost control and crashed into the sedan, which was westbound. It was not clear why the driver lost control of the pickup.

The woman was pinned inside the vehicle before she was removed by first responders.

Information about the conditions of the two children were pending.

It was not clear if the pickup driver was hurt during the wreck.

The crash prompted investigators to close part of NC-222 while they investigated the crash.
