DURHAM, N.C. — A dog was killed and a woman and cat were injured when a candle sparked a fire at a Durham home Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters said heavy fire was visible from both floors of a home at 902 Golden Crest Drive when they arrived just before 4:30 p.m. and were told by bystanders that a woman was inside the home.

Firefighters were able to get the woman to safety, and she was taken to the UNC Burn Center for treatment of burns on one arm and both legs, authorities said.

Firefighters inside the home found a cat in a bathtub on the second floor of the home and treated it with oxygen at the scene. Authorities said the cat was in good condition when it was returned to another resident of the home.

A Shih Tzu found inside the home did not survive the fire.

Authorities said the home sustained heavy damage to both floors and the attic. Authorities believe the fire was accidental and started when a resident was lighting a candle.
