Woman critically injured as stolen car strikes tree, overturns in Durham
A woman was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after speeding through a Durham intersection with a stolen car, which hit a tree, overturned and trapped her for at least 30 minutes.
Posted — UpdatedThe woman was driving a stolen 2016 Acura ILX northwest on Elmira Avenue at a high rate of speed before 3:30 a.m., Durham police said. The vehicle ran through the intersection at Fayetteville Street, struck a tree and overturned.
Police said officers tried to pull over the driver before the crash but were not pursuing the vehicle at the time of the crash. Officials did not say how long before the crash they attempted to stop the driver.
A witness said the crash involved fire, which was put out by the time emergency officials arrived.
"It was a big boom," Artis McLeod said. "I come to the front door, look around. I look over there in the yard; a car had flames coming up from under the car."
It took rescuers about 30 minutes to free the woman from the car.
The woman was not identified.
