Woman found dead behind Rocky Mount church

Police were called to The Guiding Light Church, at 204 Ivy St., at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday to check on an unresponsive woman behind the church.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A woman was found dead Thursday evening behind a local church, police said Friday.

Police were called to The Guiding Light Church, at 204 Ivy St., at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday to check on an unresponsive woman behind the church. Officers determined the woman, who was later identified as Benita R. Knight, 24, was dead.

The cause of her death hadn't been determined by Friday afternoon. Her body was taken to the state medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.

Anyone with information on the case or anyone in the Ivy Street area between noon and 6:30 p.m. Thursday is asked to call Capt. Martin McCoy of the Rocky Mount Police Department at 252-972-1485 or Crime Stoppers at 252-977-1111.
