Woman dies on her couch during house fire in Smithfield

Fire fighters reported flames coming from a back window of the duplex when they first arrived. They quickly entered the home and discovered 58-year-old Judith Ann Phillips, 58, lying unconscious on the couch in the front room.

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A woman is dead after a house fire broke out in Smithfield in the early morning hours on Saturday.

Firefighters reported flames coming from a back window of the duplex when they first arrived. They quickly entered the home and discovered 58-year-old Judith Ann Phillips lying unconscious on the couch in the front room.

Life saving efforts failed and the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene of her home on North Sussex Drive.

Two other residents and the family's dog escaped the fire, unhurt.

The America Red Cross provided assistance to surviving family members and residents of the adjoining home.

The scene is still under investigation.
