Woman dies, man seriously injured after crashing into bridge railing in Caldwell County

One person was killed and another person is in serious condition after their car crashed into a bridge railing Friday afternoon.

LENOIR, N.C. — One person was killed and another person is in serious condition after their car crashed into a bridge railing Friday afternoon.

On Friday at 3:55 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to a deadly crash in Caldwell County on Abington Road near Collettsville Road.

A car was traveling south on Abington Road when the driver veered off the right side of the road and struck part of the bridge railing.                                        

The driver of the car, James Cecil Shew, 84, of Lenoir, was transported by medical helicopter to Johnson City Medical Center, in serious condition. The passenger, Virginia Stines Shew, 82, of Lenoir, died at the scene.

Abington Road was closed in the area for approximately two hours but has since reopened.

Charges are pending upon completion of the ongoing investigation and consultation with the Caldwell County District Attorney’s Office.
