FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A woman died in a three-vehicle wreck on Country Club Drive in Fayetteville Thursday afternoon, police said.

Around 2:40 p.m., Lee Roy Syfrett, 77, of Fayetteville, lost control of a 2000 Toyota sedan going east on Country Club Drive and crossed the center line near Rosehill Road, police said. The Toyota struck a second vehicle going west on Country Club Drive.

The driver of a third westbound vehicle tried to avoid the wreck but was rear-ended by a fourth vehicle. The third vehicle overturned in a ditch off the road, police said. A fifth vehicle avoided the wreck but ran off the right side of the road and struck a curb.

Barbara Syfrett, a passenger in the Toyota, died of her injuries.

Lee Syfrett and a passenger in the second vehicle were transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Police said the passenger had a serious leg injury, but an update on Lee Syfrett's condition was not available.

Police were investigating and had not filed charges late Thursday evening.
