DURHAM, N.C. — A woman died Tuesday after a tree fell on her car during severe storms in Durham.

According to Durham police, the tree fell on a car belonging to 78-year-old Donna Warshaw of Hillsborough.

This is the first death directly related to the storms.

Police said around 4:30 p.m. Warshaw was driving north on Anderson Street in a 2023 BMW X3. When she was driving through the intersection at Morehead Avenue, a large tree fell on her car.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Anderson Street and Morehead Avenue remained closed on Wednesday afternoon.

The tree also brought down power poles, lines and stoplights in the area. Multiple trees fell, and in one spot, a branch even speared itself into the ground and destroyed a water meter.
